Veterans rejoice! Study finds alcohol better than exercise to live past 90

If you’re anything like me, you’re more likely to have a six-pack (or two) in your fridge than on your body. I’m here to tell you there is nothing wrong with that. Sure, maybe you couldn’t beat (or meet) your best ever PT test (or pass one), but thank goodness you don’t have to.

But now, there maaaaaay just be some evidence that suggests those 12-ounce curls you’ve been doing two to four nights a week will have a positive, lasting impact on your life.

A new study conducted by the University of California, Irvine claims drinking a couple of glasses of beer or wine a day is more important than exercise for living past 90.

You read that right.

The study found that those who drank two glasses of wine or beer a day were almost 20 percent less likely to experience a premature death. And here, I thought opting to crack open a cold one in lieu of hitting the treadmill wasn’t the best way to live a full life. Turns out, I may have been dead wrong.

Dr. Claudia Kawas, a neurologist and lead researcher on the project, says seniors who drink a, (and this is key here,) moderate amount of booze each day, lowered their premature death risk than seniors who exercise daily.

Kawas presented her findings at the American Associaion for the Advancement of Science’s annoual conference in Austin, Texas, on Feb. 17.

“I have no explanation for it, but I do firmly believe that modest drinking improves longevity,” she said in her keynote address.

No explanation needed, Doc! Good enough for me. 

The study monitored over 1,600 people 90-years-old and older, the fastest-growing age group in the United States. They found daily exercise for 15 to 45 minutes was found to only reduce change of premature death by just 11 percent—suck it PT studs, cross-fitters, and anyone else who has a problem with me crushing some of the best American beer I can get my hands on.

And while this study clashes with other studies that have found heavy drinking to lead to high blood pressure, cancer, and other medical conditions, the team of scientists are clear that they support additional research into claims that alcohol can actually increase mental clarity.

Look, maybe I don’t look the same in the mirror today as I did when I was running 6+ miles casually after just a few hours of sleep. And sure, maybe I can’t really justify shoveling cheese in the largest hole in my head.

And maybe, just maybe, it wouldn’t actually kill me to hit the gym, treadmill, or whatever else it is people are doing to stay in shape these days.

But, this study tells me, if nothing else, that enjoying a few beers from time to time isn’t shortening my life. Gotta go, I’m hearing rumblings about donuts being in the kitchen.
