The Pentagon is moving ahead with the process of developing a new branch of the military - the Space Force - even though Congress has yet to approve or fund the venture.

The U.S. Space Command, as it will be known, will be a joint agency that buys satellites for the military and provides defense and warfighting abilities in space.  Personnel will be drawn from the other branches of the military: Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard.   How this branch will be different than the Air Force is still under consideration.

Defense One reported today the Pentagon has drafted a preliminary plan, under the direction of the number two civilian at DoD, Deputy Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan. The 14 page report was scheduled to be delivered to lawmakers Wednesday, August 1st, but the Pentagon says the proposal, which is in its final stages, will be late.

The Space Force will require Congressional action before it can be funded.  The Defense Bill signed last week includes $130m for construction costs possibly associated with the Space Command, yet no funding for the actual command.

According to Defense One, the draft says: “The Department of Defense is establishing a Space Force to protect our economy through deterrence of malicious activities, ensure our space systems meet national security requirements and provide vital capabilities to joint and coalition forces across the spectrum of conflict."

“DoD will usher in a new age of space technology and field new systems in order to deter, and if necessary degrade, deny, disrupt, destroy and manipulate adversary capabilities to protect U.S. interests, assets and way of life…This new age will unlock growth in the U.S.industrial base, expand the commercial space economy and strengthen partnerships with our allies.”

The Space Force has gotten a lot of flack, drawing memes and tweets.
