Vet Centers offer counseling services, outreach and referral services to veterans and their families.

Located across the United States, the more than 300 centers provide eligible veterans counseling regarding their transitioning and readjustment, military sexual trauma, bereavement and family, according to the explore.va.gov.

The program was created by Congress in 1979 when they recognized that Vietnam War veterans were still struggling with readjustment after the war.

Referrals can also be made for “VA mental health care, employment, education, and other services and benefits,” according to the website. All services are free and confidential.

You don't have to apply to VA health care before visiting a center and rural veterans who can't easily access a VA hosptiral can benefit from mobile Vet Centers. Find your nearest center here.

Another part of the Vet Center program is their call center. Veterans and their families can call 1-877-WAR-VETS to talk about their military experience or other issues affecting their transition.
