There are a lot of veterans working to give back to the troops. Some send care packages to those deployed overseas, some donate their time to help active duty folks with taxes, and some put on concerts featuring A-list acts.

Ok, only one veteran does that last one. His name is Sean Gilfillan and he's the founder and CEO of BaseFest, an organization that puts on free concerts for service members and their families at bases around the country featuring popular acts like DNCE, Cole Swindell and Dustin Lynch who headlined their recent show at Fort Bliss.

Gilfillan, who enlisted in the Army before eventually attending Norwich University and entering the officer community, says he wanted to find a way to give the troops something he knew everyone on base could enjoy.

"We started by building it out as a massive festival experience so that everyone has something to do at BaseFest," Gilfillan said during an appearance on the Morning Briefing radio show. "It's a one day festival headlined by some of the biggest artists in music but also has activations from sports and fitness to technology, virtual reality, we obviously have a food and beverage component and a pretty large kids area."

With the recent Fort Bliss event now complete, three BaseFests remain for 2018 at NS Mayport, Camp Lejeune and Twentynine Palms. Next year, Gilfillan says he plans on expanding the schedule both in terms of the number of event, and the types of bases that host them.

"We don't want to just do the biggest bases in the world," Gilfillan said of his plans for the future. "We want to also hit the remote and isolated bases that truly, truly need it... next year we're gonna try to do 8-10 of these."
